Some history and background on Christian DiorChristian Dior was born in Normandy, France in 1905. He showed great interest in art, design, and fashion at an early age. Christian Dior moved to Paris in 1935 and began selling sketches of lady’s clothing to fashion designers. Christian Dior received his first break in the fashion industry when he was hired by the renowned designer, Robert Piguet in 1938. Christian Dior was an eager student and thoroughly enjoyed working with Piguet. After Christian Dior served in the army, Christian Dior was quickly hired by Lucien Lelong. Lelong’s design firm was far bigger than the Piguet firm that employed Dior prior to the war. Dior worked for Lelong for the next five years.
Christian Dior quit working for LeLong in 1946. He decided it was time to go on his own. In 1947, the House of Dior released its first major clothing line for women. Dior’s creations fascinated the fashion world. The “New Look” was elegant, classic, and the modern woman found it befitting. Throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s Dior became the world’s great arbiter of fashion. His designs were worn by royalty, were seen in Hollywood and on Broadway. Famous females wore Christian Dior’s designs. Dior hired Yves Saint Laurent to be his assistant and protégé in 1953. They produced a number of new products including perfumes, socks, ties and furs.
